My name is (James) Patrick Kozey (James Patrick Kozey) and I am a researcher and teacher studying medieval and early modern Iberia and the Mediterranean.
I am currently working on two book projects:
By Song or By Rhyme: Occitan Troubadour Lyric in Medieval Iberia, builds on work I began in my dissertation, exploring how the Occitan lyric of the troubadours fits into what Claudio Guillén would call the “literary system” of medieval Iberia and that of the broader medieval Mediterranean. An article based on this project appeared in Tenso (2022).
The second project focuses on fama and linguistic violence. Taking examples from late medieval and early modern Iberian literary and administrative practice, I trace the conceptualization of reputation as a part of the self, and look at how language could be seen to damage it. I published an article in Modern Language Notes (March 2019) dealing with these issues in Cervantes’ Rinconete y Cortadillo .
